Sternen Grill

Zurich – You are hungry but you do not have time or do not want to spend a lot of money? Go to the Sternen Grill. This take away exists since 1963. I even remember it from my childhood when we went there with my mother after shopping or cinema for a bratwurst and pommes frites.

They have redone the whole building about one year ago. I think it is still nice and many of the people are still working there. But I have to admit that it lost a bit of its charme as it is all so clean now.

But nevertheless the bratwurst is great and the mustard the hottest in town! And if you are going there alone, you have enough entertainment by all kind of people coming and going.

Sprüngli

Zurich – On a day off I enjoy sometimes a breakfast in a restaurant. As we went to the weekly market on Bürkliplatz, we went for a Birchermuesli and a coffee in Sprüngli on the ground floor. The Sprüngli is an institution in Zurich located just at the Paradeplatz in the heart of Zurich. You can order a whole breakfast on the first floor in a very elegant atmosphere. On the ground floor – where is also the shop with the famous chocolate and Luxemburgerli – there is a smaller bar. You sit in big leather sofas and can just enjoy some people watching from the inside or from the small terrace.

Rosaly’s

Zurich Last week I went with my friend to Rosalys. I haven’t been there for ages for dinner. We ordered the Cordon Bleu. They had the traditional one and the other that was a “seasonal” venison version in a panade with poppy seed. Actually I preferred the traditional one but my friend quite liked the other too.

Bottega Berta

Zurich – A wonderful Italian restaurant in the heart of Wiedikon. That was the place I discovered the best meat of Switzerland from Heinzer in Muotathal. The restaurant is quite small, so you better make a reservation. They serve fresh seasonal pasta every day including pasta al tartufo nero with black truffles. In summer, there are also some tables on the troittoir.

Solito’s

Punta Arenas – “Not to eat a good kingcrab plate is as not going by Punta Arenas. Enjoy the specialty of the house, the shellfish and all type of national and international foods, accompanied by a good Chilean wine.” This is written on the homepage of Solitos and it simply true. They have really the best kingcrab I ever had in about 10 different cooking variations. If you ever happen to be at the end of the world – bottom of Chile – you need to visit this restaurant.

Da Giuseppe

Zermatt – In the last three winter seasons we never managed to get a table at Giuseppes. We were luckier with out trekking group two weeks ago. From the outside the building looks unimpressive and also the furniture inside must have seen many guests already but what you get inside food wise is great. Giuseppe is an institution in Zermatt. My recommendation is you take the menu “Mier isch glich” or in English “I don’t care” for 65 CHF. If you are not picky you will not be disappointed in quality and quantity of food. The wine list is good as well – ask for Giuseppes recommendation.

Seebistro Luz

Lucerne – When I was in Lucerne last week I went for lunch with a friend. The bistro has a great location, directly at the lake, near the world famous KKL concert hall (by Jean Nouvel) and the main station of Lucerne. The Luz is an old landing dock that was rebuilt into a restaurant and bar. The food is simple, traditional with fair prices. In summer you can enjoy the sun on the terrace and watch the steamboats and ships landing at the docks or feed the swans and ducks.
