Restaurants around the world

Il Salotto – Latest stroke of Massimo

Zurich Readers of my blog know that two years ago my favourite Italian was Don Leone, than Massimo opened La Barracca (currently my favourite) and now he gifted Zurich with a new venue. Some food is similar as in Barraca but no pizza and the restaurant is more – as the name says – an elegant dining location. The spot must be known by many as former Zentraleck.

As primi I had fresh pasta with sausages and artichokes followed by tagliata di vitello with rocket salad….just wonderful! Definitively worth visiting.

New Point – Kebap Forever

Zurich – I went to see “Filth” in Riff Raff last Wednesday….what a laugh and drama in one piece….

But to satisfy our stomach besides the risible muscle we went to New point, probably the best kebap place outside Turkey. Served with a cold beer this is something that just makes you happy, I promise!

Cabanas – Tapas, Tapas, Tapas

Lucerne – To celebrate the end of the CAS semester at University Lucerne we went to the Spanish tapas restaurant Cabanas. We were a group of 30 people and enjoyed the easy going owner’s attitude. We just ordered various tapas and had a good red wine to accompany. The food was decent, the service really friendly, attentive and the atmosphere really cosy and lively we had a great time – it could have been somewhere in Spain.

Kronenhalle – A classic in Zurich

ZurichA thousand places to see before you die? Maybe you know this book? I think it is a great reading – not only in the bathroom… One of my passions is also travel, so I love to browse in the book and revive my memories or get new inspiration. Kronenhalle is also named in the book and I totally agree, not only for the food but alsofor the location. The restaurant formerly “Hotel de la Couronne”, reopened as “Kronenhalle” in 1924 and became popular by many people, some of the guests included also Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, James Joyce, Richard Strauss, Max Frisch and Friedrich Dürrenmatt and many more. The atmosphere is great and if you should be bored by your companions talking you can always enjoy looking at the world famous paintings (Chagall, Mirò, Braque, Matisse… ) at the walls. For food I recommend the Wiener Schnitzel with salad, not cheap at all but the portion is big and the quality superb.

Not to forget the Bar just next the restaurant, order a “Sergio” cocktail, the bar man will know…

Equinox – Visiting the Flintstones?

Zurich – Last week I had lunch at the restaurant Equinox in the hotel RenaissanceTower. Actually I just wanted to eat a mixed salad before the event in the hotel started.
But my eyes caught something on the menu, one does not get in every restaurant: marrow. When I cook Osso Bucco (also known as Gremolata) at home, I always buy some additional bones with its delicious and soft inner part…It was worth ordering it, as it was fantastic and presented in the bone.

Besides this, I saw on many tables Hamburgers (with Luma beef) and other very nicely presented dishes. On top, we received a small sweet to taste which was also delicious for free.

The restaurant and hotel are located in the old industrial zone of Zurich – Escherwyss. There are no factories anymore but the hotel took over the theme and interpreted in a modern way in the interior design. I have to mention the special attention of the staff here, they really know good service!

Schlüssel – Key to your taste buds

Zurich – Are you looking for authentic food without a lot of useless garnishing and firlefanz? If you enter the room you are very warm welcome by the hosts. The restaurant is not too big and you feel comfortable from the moment you enter the room. The decoration is simple but cosy in a typical Zurich house. The restaurant is situated in the Quartier Seefeld and aspires to be also a restaurant for the people living in the neighbourhood. So they serve good valuable menus over lunch as well.

I chose starter and main course from the daily suggestions presented by Werner. As I tried my black pudding sausage I regret I did not order it as main course…..But I was not disappointed by the main course at all. The variation of veal included filet, ragout and kidney matched perfectly the home made mashed potatoes.

Definitively worth visiting and as we heard from the owner – even more during Christmas time as they will have a decorated tree inside and outside, let’s see.

Reach out for the stars at Sternen

Walchwil – At the border of Lake Zug is this beautiful historic house from 1834 made of wood.

The hosts were very welcoming and astonished me even more as they remembered that my mother celebrated her birthday and wanted to bring her dog.

We all went for the 4 courses dinner of the seasonal menu but different choices. I chose the seafood platter as a starter that remembered me on a day by the sea with a small lobster soup with lobster, scallops and king prawns – beautiful. My next lucullan highlight was fresh duck liver on a lemon risotto with heavenly honey. I did not think the main course could top this, but my venison was just perfect in taste and texture. All the traditional side dishes as spaetzle, red cabbage, Brussels sprouts and sweet chestnut were presented in homoeopathic doses but just right to leave some space for dessert.

I have to admit that I felt a little engorged….on contrary to my wallet!

Baarcity – Bar and Restaurant with a view

Baar – Besides the spectacular view – if it’s not a foggy day – the food in the Baarcity is really good and prepared with an eye on the detail.
We ordered the salad of fresh spinach with goat’s cheese followed by lamb and a sea bream, which was my choice and a real delight. Service was very nice and attentive. For this restaurant you need to invest a little more than just your pocket money…..but worth it.
In summer there is also a terrace on the roof top.
