Zurich – Cacio e Pepe is a Roman pasta dish. “Cacio e Pepe” means “cheese and pepper” in several central Italian languages. As the name suggests, the ingredients of the dish are very simple and include only black pepper and Pecorino Romano cheese (Wiki).
I had fried little sardins, filled artichokes and parmigiana for starter. These three dishes were absolutely yummy and I can’t wait to order these again during my next visit very soon! As a main I tried the spaghetti cacio e pepe. The spaghetti were great and al dente, the sauce tasty as well but next time I definitely want to try the cream-free carbonara, which must be fantastic.

Da Angela – Italian kitchen in a calm and elegant atmosphere
Zurich – A classic in Zurich – I’ve seen the restaurant so many times by passing by but never came about. Last Friday we snatched the last table with elegant white cloth. We were so warmly welcome, you feel almost at home.
The waiters know what to do to make you feel comfortable and happy. When I couldn’t read the label on the wine bottle the waiter was so kind to lend me his glasses
I had a beautifully soft artichokes salad as a starter and a perfectly cooked veal cutlet, accompanied with homemade pappardelle. If you like Italian kitchen in a calm and elegant atmosphere, you need to visit the place.
La Balena – Tuscany in Carmel!
Carmel – After a beautiful drive from San Francicso to Carmel on Highway No 1 we watched the sunset at the beach. We were still a little jetlegged and wanted to go for dinner earlier than booked. But the small restaurant was packed with people so we went to the bar around the corner.
Our table was prepared right below the pass for food so we could sneak with an eye in the kitchen. We couldn’t believe how quiet is was as there so many hungry people and just two cooks in the kitchen.
I had bruschetta with chicken liver and gorgonzola as a starter. My husband went for the gnocchis – both amazingly good.
Of course we had to try the osso bucco when it is on the menu and as well the ravioli filled with boar. It was fantastic and we had to admit, that it competes with many restaurants in Italy.
Hiltl – now with vegetarian butchery
Zurich – I have already written about Hiltl in an earlier post. Last week I went again for lunch….I cannot explain, but although I love meat, the vegetarian food and the cool and relaxed atmosphere is unbeaten. The former animal shop around the corner is now the vegetarian butchery attached to the Hiltl concept – how applicable!
Il Salotto – Latest stroke of Massimo
Zurich – Readers of my blog know that two years ago my favourite Italian was Don Leone, than Massimo opened La Barracca (currently my favourite) and now he gifted Zurich with a new venue. Some food is similar as in Barraca but no pizza and the restaurant is more – as the name says – an elegant dining location. The spot must be known by many as former Zentraleck.
As primi I had fresh pasta with sausages and artichokes followed by tagliata di vitello with rocket salad….just wonderful! Definitively worth visiting.
Bottega Berta
Zurich – A wonderful Italian restaurant in the heart of Wiedikon. That was the place I discovered the best meat of Switzerland from Heinzer in Muotathal. The restaurant is quite small, so you better make a reservation. They serve fresh seasonal pasta every day including pasta al tartufo nero with black truffles. In summer, there are also some tables on the troittoir.
Da Giuseppe
Zermatt – In the last three winter seasons we never managed to get a table at Giuseppes. We were luckier with out trekking group two weeks ago. From the outside the building looks unimpressive and also the furniture inside must have seen many guests already but what you get inside food wise is great. Giuseppe is an institution in Zermatt. My recommendation is you take the menu “Mier isch glich” or in English “I don’t care” for 65 CHF. If you are not picky you will not be disappointed in quality and quantity of food. The wine list is good as well – ask for Giuseppes recommendation.

Ponte Brolla – This is one of the very old grotti in Ticino that was on the passage of many travellers since 400 years ago with direction Genova to the big ships leaving for “America”. The menu is small but … Continue reading
