Bar Basso

Zurich – Recently I went to Bar Basso restaurant with a friend to have a relaxed evening and decent dinner. I can really recommend the pizzas there as they have a proper wood fired oven. The other food – mostly Italina style – on the plates looked also yummy. The restaurant is informal and very relaxed in a nice atmosphere. The prices are ok for what you get. They have a terrace outside in summer as well.

Osteria Piazzetta Cattedrale

Ostuni – Still in Ostuni we also needed somewhere to have dinner. A very good friend of mine recommended this cosy and elegant restaurant, just opposite the Cathedral of Ostuni.

I had a beautiful starter made of zuchhini and presented in a flan with different herbs. As main course I chose the delicious tagliata di manzo with salad. As they had also fresh fish that the waiter presented on a plate, some of us were not dissapointed with their choice.

The dessert was a pear pie, extraordinary good – no wonder they are also in the guide of Gault Millau.

Taverna della Gelosia

Ostuni – During our holiday in Puglia, south Italy we spent one night in Ostuni, the white city. For lunch we found a beautiful restaurant that had tables outside on different levels as the city is built on a hill with thousands of steps. The tables are under one huge fig tree and surrounded by many beautiful plants. In the distance you can even see a little bit of the sea.

For starters we ordered a variety of tipical antipasti from the region. Many of the recipies stem from the middle age. We had cod fish in black crispy dough, broccoli flan, a special fresh cheese with a topping of apple, pear and some spices and much more.. I cannot really remember. Actually, we were already full but ordered before three different pasta to taste. The first was a green pasta with different herbs, spinach and vegetables, the second a black pasta (orecchiette) with a vegetable sauce and the third thick fettucine with tomatoe and cinghiale (wild boar). It was all just fantastic food and I really recommend to go.

La Zagra – Elegant Italian eating in Zurich

Zurich – On a Thursday evening, we visited the restaurant with another friend-couple of us. The atmosphere in the restaurant is a little cold and the painted portraits on the wall were for my taste a little disturbing.

We had salad and mixed starters as first course. The others tried the loup de mer, osso bucco which they liked a lot. I had once more the tagliata – this time interpreted not with rocket salad but with some very delicious artichokes. The meat itself was made to perfection, really worth the price.

Osteria Gallo d’Oro is indeed a precious retreat

Lugano – We spent last weekend in Lugano and enjoyed the first springy rays of sunlight.

In the evening we tried a restaurant a friend recommended us. We had a look at the website and it sounded quite nice. We did not expect a lot. We then were tought different. The atmosphere is at first not very cosy – but the food was excellent, tipical ticino ingredients, fresh and cooked with passion. The service too was great, very friendly and personal. I recommend a variety of the first courses, then either thin sliced liver with a red wine reduction or the “Tagliata”, sliced beef fillet with rocket salad. You should not miss the desserts – especially to mention is the vanilla ice cream with self made crystallised orange fruits (I normally do not like at all).

La Baracca – A small Italian island in Switzerland

Zurich – Yesterday we celebrated the birthday of a very good friend in the Baracca in “Kreis” 4 in Zurich. Massimo and his team welcomes every guest and you feel a little bit as if you were visiting your Italian relatives at home.

The food is indiscussably good, the pizza is crispy on the bottom and the topping always fresh and an explosion of flavour in the mouth, the pasta is not just macceroni or penne, but spignoli, strozzapreti or other interesing varieties with delicious sauces, the fish or meat just excellent, simple and good. The atmosphere is very relaxed and you can just enjoy a perfect evening with your friends. It can get quite lively and loud later in the night. This restaurant definitely one of my favourite places in Zurich.
