New Point – Kebap Forever

Zurich – I went to see “Filth” in Riff Raff last Wednesday….what a laugh and drama in one piece….

But to satisfy our stomach besides the risible muscle we went to New point, probably the best kebap place outside Turkey. Served with a cold beer this is something that just makes you happy, I promise!

Kronenhalle – A classic in Zurich

ZurichA thousand places to see before you die? Maybe you know this book? I think it is a great reading – not only in the bathroom… One of my passions is also travel, so I love to browse in the book and revive my memories or get new inspiration. Kronenhalle is also named in the book and I totally agree, not only for the food but alsofor the location. The restaurant formerly “Hotel de la Couronne”, reopened as “Kronenhalle” in 1924 and became popular by many people, some of the guests included also Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, James Joyce, Richard Strauss, Max Frisch and Friedrich Dürrenmatt and many more. The atmosphere is great and if you should be bored by your companions talking you can always enjoy looking at the world famous paintings (Chagall, Mirò, Braque, Matisse… ) at the walls. For food I recommend the Wiener Schnitzel with salad, not cheap at all but the portion is big and the quality superb.

Not to forget the Bar just next the restaurant, order a “Sergio” cocktail, the bar man will know…

Equinox – Visiting the Flintstones?

Zurich – Last week I had lunch at the restaurant Equinox in the hotel RenaissanceTower. Actually I just wanted to eat a mixed salad before the event in the hotel started.
But my eyes caught something on the menu, one does not get in every restaurant: marrow. When I cook Osso Bucco (also known as Gremolata) at home, I always buy some additional bones with its delicious and soft inner part…It was worth ordering it, as it was fantastic and presented in the bone.

Besides this, I saw on many tables Hamburgers (with Luma beef) and other very nicely presented dishes. On top, we received a small sweet to taste which was also delicious for free.

The restaurant and hotel are located in the old industrial zone of Zurich – Escherwyss. There are no factories anymore but the hotel took over the theme and interpreted in a modern way in the interior design. I have to mention the special attention of the staff here, they really know good service!

Schlüssel – Key to your taste buds

Zurich – Are you looking for authentic food without a lot of useless garnishing and firlefanz? If you enter the room you are very warm welcome by the hosts. The restaurant is not too big and you feel comfortable from the moment you enter the room. The decoration is simple but cosy in a typical Zurich house. The restaurant is situated in the Quartier Seefeld and aspires to be also a restaurant for the people living in the neighbourhood. So they serve good valuable menus over lunch as well.

I chose starter and main course from the daily suggestions presented by Werner. As I tried my black pudding sausage I regret I did not order it as main course…..But I was not disappointed by the main course at all. The variation of veal included filet, ragout and kidney matched perfectly the home made mashed potatoes.

Definitively worth visiting and as we heard from the owner – even more during Christmas time as they will have a decorated tree inside and outside, let’s see.

Ah-Hua – Khop Khun khaa for a good lunch location in Zurich

Zurich – Last week I went to the Ah-Hua for lunch. I haven’t been there for a while. The concept in the middle of the city of Zurich did not change. You can get good authentic Thai kitchen for a reasonable price. If you have an important meeting afterwards I recommend to leave the jacket at the wardrobe at the entrance.

Geeren – Metzgete

Geeren – About 20 minutes from Zurich this very charming and easy going restaurant is located in the middle of nowhere. If you are a meat lover you should not miss the “Metzgete” – butcher’s party from October to December.

If I only think about the black pudding and liver sausages there, my mouth begins to water…I go there regularly since 5 years – mostly in a small group of people as last week. Portions are big and a have fair prices, you will not leave with a half empty stomach at all. If you still have some space, try the “vermicelles” (chestnut in form of spaghettis) with meringue and whipped cream….I just love it.

My tipp, leave your jacket and clothing that is not easy to wash in the car as it might could smell a little.

Caduff’s Wine loft – Wild thing

Zurich – yesterday we went to Caduff’s Wine Loft with friends. I haven’t been there for at least 10 years.

At the moment they have their “venison week”. Beat Caduff is hunting in the mountains and brings the best shots to his Wine Loft. The food was really fantastic and you can experience a difference in quality. We had “Hirschpfeffer” some kind of stew, entrecote, and I tried for the first time in my life a grouse. The service was really nice and attentive. We also visited the really impressive wine cellar and could choose our own red wine and take it back to the table. We also found the 4kilos wine in one of the shelves (don’t miss to watch their videos). We visited this special boutique bodega when we were in Mallorca. Caduff is now preparing for “Metzgete” weeks, difficult to translate, maybe “butchers party” after slaughtering can explain. Usually celebrated in the months of October and November. I’m longing forward to it….but more about that next week.

Chianalea

Zurich – This restaurant with the difficult name opened in April 2013 in the middle of Kreis 4. When I first read about the restaurant in Züritipp Gastro (one of my favourite research sources) I wanted to reserve a table but it was fully booked.

The restaurant is quite small and the ambiance charming; you can see that the two guys Francesco and Enrico manage this restaurant with a lot of passion. They have both Italian roots in the village of Chianalea in Calabria and dedicated the restaurant to it. The food of this area (as well as pizza) is served in the restaurant and opens up to a new clientele. I had the fettucine with scampi and white beans…something I never had before in this combination but is really delicious. My partner had the tagliata di manzo, served on a wood platter which was also very good. Besides a lot of good Italian wines you can have water from the tap, that is built in the bar, what I found very likeable. They serve also pizza and in summer some tables are located on the quiet street-terrace.
